About Sunshine Hut, the bottle’s namesake
Maf Carter’s Hut, located in the Vale of Belvoir region outside Cradle Mountain National Park. Carries a fascinating history with two distinct timelines and names. Built by Mafeking (Maf) Carter, a pioneer bushman, prospector, and hunter, the hut has been a part of the landscape since Carter and his three sons constructed it in 1938, naming it “Sunshine Hut” due to its sunny location. Another account suggests the hut was built in 1960 by Maf and his friends, using recycled materials and naming it “Yackandandah Hut” after a town in Victoria.
Set deep in an aged Myrtle forest, the hut featured a living area with an open fireplace and a smaller room used as a skin shed, along with a veranda. Maf Carter continued using the hut until his death in 1976, after which his family and others used it until the early 1980s. Despite the Cradle Mountain Link Road's construction in the late 1980s, which disrupted the area's isolation, the hut remains well-hidden and fragile. Today, under the care of Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service and listed on the Tasmania Heritage Register thanks to a submission by the late Simon Cubit, the hut is recognized for its cultural value and heritage significance, known officially as Yackandandah Hut but often referred to as Maf Carter’s Sunshine Hut.
